Business Profile

Bus Service Centro works in partnership with bus operators, local authorities and other organisations to improve the quality of bus services in the West Midlands.

Buses provide 92% of public transport journeys in the West Midlands and account for nearly one million journeys a day. There are a number of operators, the largest being National Express West Midlands, which accounts for 77% of all journeys made. The Rotala and Arriva groups have also extended their interest in the region through the acquisition of smaller bus companies.

Rail The region's rail routes are strongly focused on serving Birmingham and the West Midlands metropolitan area, and are also at the heart of the national network.

Centro has joined Network Rail, Birmingham City Council and other partners on the £600m Gateway project. New Street will be transformed into a 21st century hub linked to bus and Metro, bringing regenration and jobs to the heart of the city.

Rail patronage has increased by over 50% since privatisation, well above the national average, with over 1,300 trains a day.

Centro provides some 6,500 free car park spaces at rail stations which take 3million cars off the road and save 98 tonnes of carbon emissions a year. All have bright lighting, CCTV, Help Points and other security measures.

Business Profile Centro, the West Midlands Integrated Transport Authority, promotes and develops public transport across the region.

About Us If you use public transport and have travelled around the region, you will have seen the Network West Midlands logo and may have also noticed our exhibition bus out and about in town and city centres and at shows and special events, spreading the news of the services we provide. But some people might still be unsure of what exactly it is that we do.

We provide Travel Information Centres at Coventry, Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton and work with partners who provide centres at Walsall and West Bromwich.

We work in partnership with operators in the West Midlands (under the Network West Midlands brand) to develop integrated ticketing that meets customers needs. Centro also provides a range of concessionary fares for children, the elderly and disabled travellers.

Centro does not directly operate any of the trains which serve the region.
