Shenley Court is a successful, well established 11-18 comprehensive school.
It aims to ensure that all pupils perform to the best of their ability in a happy and caring environment.
About Us Shenley Court is more than just a new type of school. It represents a new approach to learning which is purposeful and achievement focused. Academies are leaders in innovation. The independent status of Academies allows new styles of teaching and learning, supported by significant investment in ICT, which is already visible in our classrooms and our on-line curriculum.
Business Profile The skills students learn at Shenley Academy are already providing the foundation for their future. We ensure that our young people achieve academic success, with important life skills gained through our academy-wide emphasis on 'learning for life'.
About Us Examination results and hard work are essential. But life at Shenley Academy is also about being part of the team, making a contribution and making the most of our extensive opportunities. 70% of our students took part in out of hours activities last year, next year we want 100% to take part!! Not surprisingly, the overwhelming majority of parents confirmed through our surveys during 2010-11 that their child enjoys school and feels safe here, a situation we aim to maintain and even improve upon.
This has been a great year for us at Shenley Academy. After becoming one of Birmingham's first academies in 2009, with specialisms in Science, Creative and Performing Arts, this year we became one of a select number of schools nationally to be graded 'Outstanding' by OFSTED Inspectors.
The impressive report opens "Shenley Academy is an outstanding school. Its overall provision is outstanding because so many elements are excellent and rigorous self-evaluation ensures that outcomes, both in terms of students' academic achievement and their wider personal development, are ever-improving.
Students make good progress at every key stage." Inspectors concluded that staff have created a safe and open learning environment which has resulted in good behaviour, "Students enjoy being at the academy and are proud of the many and varied contributions they make to their own community."
Artsmark Gold Award We are also delighted to announce that the academy has just been awarded an Artsmark Gold award for the high quality of our arts education. Artsmark is a national accreditation funded by Arts Council England that celebrates excellent standards of teaching in drama, music, dance and art in schools throughout England. It is developed in partnership with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Department of Education and OfSTED. We are extremely proud to have received this award which reflects the outstanding quality of arts education at Shenley Academy. Our students have access to the highest standard of teaching in all areas of the arts, and it is a real tribute to our staff.
We also have much to look forward to. Opening in September 2012, our new building, designed by highly acclaimed Architects, Edward Cullinan, will completely replace the existing school buildings. Our extensive 37 acre site will be landscaped to provide a park like setting, with impressive new sports facilities, outdoor learning spaces and play areas. It will be a wonderful place to grow and learn. We have a great future ahead of us.
The "outstanding" curriculum is tailored to meet the needs and aspirations of different groups, and is underpinned by "high-quality teaching, exemplary use of assessment and rigorous tracking, combined effectively with excellent guidance." The curriculum "provides rich opportunities for high-quality learning and wider personal development and well-being, and is carefully adapted to meet the specific and changing needs of individuals and groups. Students have a high take-up across a vast range of clubs, visits and residential experiences that make a significant contribution to their personal development." Partners from business and other organisations support this programme, which is one of the keys to the academy's success. We have built an impressive group of partners, including KPMG, Birmingham and Newman Universities and Birmingham City Football Club. And many students choose to stay on into the successful Sixth Form Centre.
