By organising sporting and physical activities for local people in Wednesbury, Sport Wednesbury is designed to improve general physical health as well as encouraging people to try new sports.
The organisation is funded by Sport England, as part of the initiative to support grassroot sports activity across the country.
Wednesbury Sport was set up in direct response to a need for more activity in the local area, helping to improve health and well-being throughout the borough where there was previously very little provision for it.
With the funding aiming to increase the amount of adults over 25 that take part in sports and other physical activity, hub sites are present throughout the area including Wednesbury North, Wednesbury South and Friar Park.
The work of Sport Wednesbury has focused on:
• Increased participation in sport
• Engaging the community as well as developing and strengthening the sporting offer in the area
• Developing pathways into local clubs
• Creating local clubs where there aren't any
• Developing a workforce in the area to help deliver the programme
The different sports and physical activities that are available include walking football, badminton, boot camp, circuits, zumba, seated exercise, netball, rounders, tennis and water polo.
All activities are either free or no more than £2 to take part, making them easy to access and affordable at the same time.
Sport Wednesbury has helped establish and strengthen links between a wide range of partners who are working in the community. These links with networks has assisted in overcoming community differences, also reducing scepticism in the project for its first year.
If you're looking to access a new sport or want to partake in more physical activity, Sport Wednesbury can help. For more information, take a look at the website via this page.
